LUBBOCK, Texas (Ticker) -- Bob Knight has done plenty to turn around Texas Tech. But he has been unable to reverse its fortunes against Texas.
Brandon Mouton scored 20 points and T.J. Ford added 17 and as the sixth-ranked Longhorns continued their mastery of the Red Raiders with a 76-71 Big 12 Conference victory.
Texas (20-5, 11-3 Big 12) has won 14 straight against Texas Tech, including all 10 meetings since the formation of the conference in 1996. The Longhorns remained tied with Oklahoma for second place in the Big 12, one game behind Kansas.
James Thomas scored four straight points to snap a 41-41 tie and give Texas the lead for good. That started a 10-1 run that freshman Brad Buckman ended with a pair of buckets for a 51-42 advantage.
Ford made a pair from the line for a 68-58 lead before Texas Tech (16-9, 6-8) responded with seven straight points. The Red Raiders climbed within three on four occasions in the final 90 seconds, only to see the Longhorns respond with a pair of free throws each time.
Brian Boddicker hit the first pair, Ford was 4-of-4 at the line and Mouton sealed the win with two free throws with two seconds left. Texas shot 85 percent (23-of-27) at the line.
Will Chavis scored 21 points for Texas Tech, which must win its final two games to finish .500 in Big 12 play. The Red Raiders fell to 0-3 against ranked opponents this season at the United Spirit Arena and are set to welcome No. 7 Kansas on Monday.
Mouton nailed a 3-pointer to trigger a 10-0 tear as Texas grabbed a 15-7 advantage more than eight minutes into the contest. Ford converted a layup on the fast break for a 19-10 cushion and the Longhorns settled for a 37-33 lead at halftime.
Mikey Marshall's dunk pulled Texas Tech into a 41-41 tie early in the second half before Texas took control. Mouton's basket with 11:49 remaining gave the Longhorns their largest lead at 56-46.
Ford struggled in the second half before coming up with a steal and a layup for a 64-57 advantage with 5:21 left. Ford handed out eight of Texas' 14 assists and helped limit Andre Emmett to 7-of-19 shooting for 20 points.
Buckman finished with 14 points and James Thomas added 11 for Texas, which has won six out of seven. Mouton's basket with 1:17 left in the first half gave him 1,000 points for his career.
Texas coach Rick Barnes improved to 39-2 against in-state opponents - the only two losses came against Houston in his first career game with the Longhorns and a defeat to Texas A&M last season. Barnes is 10-0 against the Red Raiders.
The Longhorns notched their fourth straight 20-win season, tying a school record. They also accomplished the feat from 1988-92.
Kasib Powell scored 11 points for Texas Tech, which held a commanding 44-24 advantage in points in the paint. But the Red Raiders made just half of their 18 foul shots, including a 1-of-5 effort by Powell.
