KINGSTON, Rhode Island (Ticker) -- Seton Hall collapsed and perhaps displayed the wisdom of its exclusion from the NCAA Tournament.
Dawan Robinson nailed a 3-pointer with 4.1 seconds left as Rhode Island scored the final nine points to pull out a 61-60 triumph over Seton Hall in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament.
Despite winning 10 games in the Big East Conference during the regular season, the Pirates did not receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The final score marked the only time they trailed.
The Rams (19-11) trailed by as many as 18 points and were down eight with only four minutes remaining. But Robinson led the way with 17 points as Rhode Island earned a fourth victory in five games and set up a second-round contest with the Temple-Boston College winner.
Andre Barrett paced the Pirates (17-13) with 17 points, including a pair of free throws that made it 60-52 with four minutes to go.
Brian Woodward, the Rams' regular-season scoring leader, sparked the decisive run with a jumper. Marcel Momplasir hit two free throws and Jon Clark made a jumper with 30 seconds to play that made it 60-58.
Seton Hall missed three shots during the final four minutes to drop its 10th straight NIT contest. It closed the season with four losses in its final five games.
