LUBBOCK, Texas (Ticker) -- Robert Tomaszek scored 14 points and Kasib Powell added 12 as Texas Tech posted a 57-48 victory over San Diego State and advanced to the quarterfinals of the National Invitation Tournament.
Andre Emmett contributed nine points and 15 rebounds for the Red Raiders (20-12), who await the winner of the second-round contest between Iowa and Georgia Tech.
Tomaszek assisted on Ronald Ross' jumper to give Texas Tech a 48-45 edge with 5:39 to play, sparking an 11-3 game-closing run.
Powell tallied five points before Tomaszek made 1-of-2 from the line to cap the surge and secure the Red Raiders' fourth victory in five games.
Bob Knight guided a team to the final eight of the NIT for the first time in nearly two decades.
The controversial coach made 24 NCAA Tournament appearances with Indiana and made the NCAAs in his first season with Texas Tech. But Knight also has enjoyed success in the NIT, winning the championship in 1979 and finishing second in 1985.
The game was a rematch of Texas Tech's 75-63 victory in San Diego on January 6.
