NCAA Basketball Recap (Georgia Tech-Louisville)

Posted: Sat November 29, 1997 at 3:57 p.m. EST

GEORGIA TECH 73, (19) LOUISVILLE 69

Matt Harpring and Dion Glover each scored 18 points as Georgia Tech withstood a scoring drought late in the fourth quarter and upset Louisville, 73-69, in a sloppy championship game of the Puerto Rico Shootout.

Harpring was the tournament's most outstanding player, helping the Jackets defeat St. John's in Friday's semifinals with 19 points and 12 rebounds. He scored just two points in the third quarter and none in the fourth Saturday, allowing Louisville to stay in the game.

Georgia Tech (4-0) led 67-59 with 3:32 left after Jason Floyd's three-pointer but kept the Cardinals in the game by failing to score a point in the next 2:44. The Yellow Jackets' eight-point lead matched their biggest advantage of the day.

Cameron Murray, who injured his right shoulder last week, led Louisville (2-1) with 14 points, but managed only five free throws in the second half, the first two of which cut the lead to 69-66 with 43 seconds to play. After Georgia Tech's Jason Spivey hit two free throws with 38 seconds left, Murray missed the second of two free throws after hitting his first seven.

Louisville's Nate Johnson hit a three-pointer with 3:05 remaining to cut the deficit to 67-62, but the Cardinals missed a three-pointer with 1:18 remaining that would have cut the lead to three. They failed to score until Murray's free throws with 43 seconds to play.

Eric Johnson and Nate Johnson kept Louisville in the game earlier in the fourth quarter, combining for all nine of the Cardinals points in a 3:05 stretch that saw them cut the lead from 61-53 to 67-62.

Michael Maddox chipped in 16 points and seven rebounds and Alvin Jones added five points, 10 rebounds and three blocks for the Yellow Jackets, who made 8-of-18 three-point attempts.

Tony Williams scored 13 points off the bench and Marques Mayben added 11 for the Cardinals, who shot 39.1 percent from the field. Louisville, which also lost the 1995 Puerto Rico Shootout final, 82-78, to Auburn, will play Georgia Tech again on December 20th.
