NCAA Tournament Recap (Pennsylvania-Florida)
Posted: Fri March 12, 1999 at 2:53 a.m EST SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Freshman Teddy Dupay scored seven points during a 14-0 second-half run and Florida held Pennsylvania to just 18 points after halftime to earn a 75-61 victory in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in the West Region. Jed Ryan drilled six 3-pointers and scored all 22 of his points in the opening 20 minutes, helping Pennsylvania to a 43-32 halftime advantage. But the Quakers went ice cold in the second half, when Florida outscored them, 43-18. Mike Miller scored 15 points and Brent Wright added 15 and 12 rebounds for Florida (21-8), which will play 14th-seeded Weber State in the second round Saturday. The Gators picked up their first NCAA Tournament victory since going to the 1994 Final Four. Pennsylvania (21-6) has not won an NCAA Tournament game since beating Nebraska in the first round in 1994. The Quakers were making their first appearance in the field of 64 since 1995. Geoff Owens, playing with a broken jaw, made the second of two free throws with just under 16 minutes to play, giving the Quakers a 48-38 lead. But Pennsylvania would not score again until Frank Brown's jumper with 9:24 left as the Gators exploded for 14 straight points. Miller and Wright hit consecutive jumpers to begin the spurt, and after Michael Jordan missed the front end of a 1-and-1, Dupay's bank shot made it 48-44 with 12:12 remaining. Jordan again misfired from the line, and Major Parker scored the next three points on a leaner in the lane and a free throw to bring Florida within 48-47. Dupay drove for a layup with 10:56 left to give Florida the lead for good and he followed just under a minute later with a 3-pointer that made it 52-48. Brown's jumper made it a two-point game, but Dupay hit two from the line and Greg Stolt followed with a 3-pointer to give Florida a 57-50 advantage with 8:09 to go and control of the game. Dupay netted 14 points, Kenyan Weaks 11 and Eddie Shannon 10 to give Florida five players in double figures. Miller also grabbed 10 rebounds for the Gators, who shot 44 percent (22-of-50), were 8-of-18 from 3-point range and held a 36-28 advantage on the boards. Ryan made 6-of-10 3-pointers and was 8-of-14 from the field. Matt Lengel hit 4-of-16 from beyond the arc en route to 16 points and Jordan added 15 points but was just 3-of-12 from 3-point range. Pennsylvania was 14-of-32 from behind the arc while shooting 43 percent (21-of-49). Ryan drained four of his six 3-pointers in the opening eight minutes as the Quakers jumped to a 24-12 lead. But Weaks and Shannon hit hit 3-pointers during a 14-5 run as Florida closed within 29-26 on a hook shot by Wright with 6:56 left in the first half. The Quakers went right back to their unconscious outside shooting, as Langel drained three 3-pointers and Ryan his sixth of the half over a four-minute span as Pennsylvania rebuilt its advantage to 41-28 en route to its 11-point halftime lead. Pennsylvania shot 56 percent (15-of-27) and made 11-of-17 3-pointers in the opening 20 minutes but was held to just six field goals and 27 percent (6-of-22) shooting in the second half.© 2000 Sportsticker Enterprises, LP
