NCAA Tournament Recap (Purdue-Texas)
Posted: Sat March 13, 1999 at 2:04 a.m EST BOSTON (Ticker) -- Cameron Stephens' 18-footer from the right corner with 4.8 seconds to play snapped a tie as 10th-seeded Purdue turned back Texas, 58-54, in the first round of the East Region of the NCAA Tournament. Texas (19-13) forged a 54-54 tie with 25.2 seconds left on William Clay's 3-pointer from the left wing. After a timeout, the Boilermakers ran a set play for the final shot. Tony Mayfield drove the right side of the lane, drawing his defender and 7-foot center Chris Mihm toward him before he kicked the ball to Stephens, who got a clean look and shot over Mihm. "Tony did a great job of penetrating the lane and kicking to me," said Stephens. "I saw their big guy coming at me, so I had to release it pretty quick." "We actually practiced the play that won the game," said Boilermakers coach Gene Keady. "It was a play where you draw the center into the middle of the lane and then you kick the ball out. Cameron did a nice job of knocking the shot down." The Longhorns called timeout to set up their final play, but it never materialized as Gabe Muoneke's inbounds pass sliced toward the right sideline, where Kris Clack could not control it as it went out of bounds. Texas fouled Mayfield before the inbounds pass, but the 6-1 senior calmly sank both free throws to seal the victory. Cornell finished with 18 points and Brian Cardinal added 14 for Purdue (20-12), which will play second seed Miami in Sunday's second round. Mihm scored 21 points and Muoneke added 12 for the Longhorns, who won the Big 12 Conference regular-season title in coach Rick Barnes' first season but suffered their first loss in the first round of the NCAA Tournament since 1992. "When you commit as many turnovers as we did, you can't expect to win," said Barnes. "I thought we actually played pretty well, but we gave up way too many chances to score." Neither team was able to build a lead bigger than four points in the second half. Purdue held a 44-40 lead after Cardinal hit a 3-pointer with 12:31 left, but Mihm had seven points in a 9-4 burst as the Longhorns grabbed a 49-48 lead at the 5:40 mark on a fadeaway by the 7-foot center. Cardinal sank two free throws almost two minutes later, and Purdue clung to the one-point advantage until Chico Vazquez sliced into the lane and hit a lay-in with 1:21 left to give the Longhorns a 51-50 lead. Cornell countered with a bucket and two free throws to give Purdue a 54-51 lead with 37 seconds left, setting up Clay's game-tying 3-pointer. Purdue led 20-13 midway through the first half, but Mihm hit four free throws to begin and end a 12-1 tear, giving the Longhorns a 25-21 lead with 4:52 to go. The Boilermakers regrouped and took a 30-29 lead at halftime. The Boilermakers were horrific from 3-point range, making just 4-of-23. Purdue shot 38 percent (21-of-56) overall but forced 22 turnovers. Texas shot 41 percent (19-of-46) as five players scored all its points. Clay finished with nine, Ivan Wagner seven and Clack, who averages 14.5 per game, was held to five on 2-of-9 shooting.© 2000 Sportsticker Enterprises, LP
