NCAA Tournament Recap (Purdue-Temple)

Posted: Sat March 20, 1999 at 12:11 a.m EST

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Everyone knows Temple plays excellent defense with its matchup zone. But few expected the Owls to match that excellence on the offensive end.

Marc Karcher scored 21 points as Temple parlayed a 10-point possession in the first half into a 30-7 run as the Owls ran past 10th-seeded Purdue, 77-55, in the East Region semifinals of the NCAA Tournament.

Pepe Sanchez added 17 points for Temple (24-10), which scored 47 points in the first half and was never threatened during the final 20 minutes. The Owls, who recorded their third-highest point total of the season, will play top-seeded and top-ranked Duke for a spot in the Final Four at St. Petersburg.

Temple lost to the Blue Devils in the 1988 East Region final at East Rutherford when it was a top seed.

The Owls trailed 11-7 early in the contest before Kevin Lyde had a follow shot with 13:21 left as part of a three-point play. Temple guard Quincy Wadley went over to throw a punch on Lyde in celebration and bumped Purdue's Jaraan Cornell in the process.

Cornell shoved back and was whistled for a technical foul. After Lyde completed his three-point play, Sanchez sank the two free throws for the technical. On the ensuing possession, Rasheed Brokenborough was fouled, and after missing the first free throw, Boilermakers coach Gene Keady was hit with a technical.

Brokenborough made the second, and Sanchez made another two free throws. Karcher hit a 10-footer on the resulting possession to make it 17-7 with 12:43 left in the first half, and Brokenborough hit a 3-pointer 48 seconds later to make it 20-7.

Sanchez continued his strong all-around play with nine assists, six steals and six rebounds. The Owls are in the regional final for the first time since 1993, when they reached the round of eight as a seed.

Cornell finished with 14 points and Alan Eldridge added nine for Purdue (21-13), which shot 13-of-22 from 3-point range against the Owls famed 2-3 zone. The Boilermakers were denied their first regional final appearance since 1994.
