McGee brothers Ex-UNM players plead innocent to drug chargesPosted: Thursday June 11, 1998 02:01 PM
ALBUQUERQUE (AP) - Former University of New Mexico basketball players Andre and Darrell McGee pleaded innocent Thursday to drug charges. The McGees, who are brothers, entered their pleas during their arraignments before U.S. Magistrate Lorenzo Garcia. Darrell McGee, 27, was charged with one count of distribution of less than five grams of crack cocaine and one count of possession with intent to distribute, which carries a maximum penalty of 40 years in prison and a $2 million fine. Andre McGee, 41, was charged with one count of distribution of less than five grams of crack cocaine, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine; and two counts of possession, which carries a penalty of 10 years to life imprisonment and $8 million in fines. The McGees, both UNM point guards in the 1980s, were being held without bond in the Sandoval County Detention Center in Bernalillo. "We're working on trying to get a third-party custodian and a property bond to work out a release, and we're optimistic we'll be able to do that for Darrell McGee," said Jerry Walz of Albuquerque, Darrell McGee's attorney. The case has been assigned to U.S. District Judge C. LeRoy Hansen, Walz said.
