NCAA gives Purdue more time to respond to charges Posted: Thursday June 18, 1998 03:52 PM
WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana (AP) -- The NCAA has given Purdue additional time to respond to allegations of possible recruiting violations by its basketball program, athletic director Morgan Burke announced Thursday. "Our legal counsel is doing everything in his power to schedule appointments with those individuals whose statements to the NCAA will have a bearing on Purdue's position," Burke said in a statement. "This process is taking much more time than expected." The NCAA extended the deadline for Purdue's response to August 7. The Boilermakers announced in March that the NCAA had expanded its inquiry into possible violations into a full investigation. The initial deadline for responding was May 19. Purdue has already disciplined assistant coach Frank Kendrick for a rules violation that he initially had denied. The discipline came after Kendrick admitted that he lied about giving a basketball recruit a ride from Mackey Arena to a nearby hotel. Jamaal Davis, then a recruit from Merrillville High School, was in West Lafayette for an AAU game in June of 1996 and announced his college choice that night. But the ride with Kendrick came during a period designated by the NCAA as one when coaches were not to have any contact with prospective athletes. Kendrick was fined an undisclosed amount of money and forbidden to recruit off-campus for 10 days during the official recruiting period that began in November 1996. In each of the current charges under investigation, the NCAA also names Kendrick as the one who arranged the contacts between the athletes and Purdue boosters who allegedly provided improper assistance to Boilermakers players or recruits.
