Hitting the books Clemson's Whitt, Miller suspended for Duke gamePosted: Wednesday January 20, 1999 07:58 PM
CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) -- Clemson's struggling basketball team took another hit before the start of Wednesday's game with No. 2 Duke as coach Larry Shyatt suspended two players. Guard Johnny Miller and forward Vincent Whitt were suspended for violating unspecified team rules, the school said about three hours before tip-off. Neither player would be courtside, Shyatt said. Both would be studying at Vickery Hall, Clemson's academic learning center for athletes. Shyatt did not say how long the suspensions would last. Clemson (12-6, 1-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) has been ranked most of this season. But the Tigers fell out of the Top 25 after Sunday's 65-58 loss to Virginia, Clemson's fifth in six games. Miller, a senior, had started every game this season, averaging 5.9 points and 4.3 assists per game. Whitt, who started 11 of 18 games, is Clemson's No. 3 scorer with a 7.1 points per game.
