UNC's Capel out with mono Tar Heel freshman will miss practice for two weeksPosted: Friday January 22, 1999 04:03 PM
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -- North Carolina freshman Jason Capel has mononucleosis and may have to stay on the sidelines for a month. Capel, who had started in 18 games, didn't practice this week and missed Thursday's home game against Virginia. Tests came back positive Friday morning, the school said. Capel will not be allowed to practice with the No. 10 Tar Heels for two weeks, said team doctor Brian Smith, adding he hopes Capel will be able to play again before the end of the regular season in late February. The 6-foot-8 guard-forward from Norfolk, Va., is averaging 9.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. "We are disappointed for Jason and our team because he has been playing so well," coach Bill Guthridge said. "He is a player you can depend on to make smart plays. Our other young players will have to step forward while he is out." Assistant coach Dave Hanners also has mononucleosis.
