Posted: Sunday February 28, 1999 08:29 PM
GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) - Beth Schoolfield scored 24 points and Appalachian State tied a Southern Conference tournament record with 31 free throws to down Davidson 78-69 Sunday for the league title.
It was the sixth Southern Conference tournament title for sixth-seeded Appalachian State (14-14) in 16 years -- the most by any school in the league.
Davidson, the No. 4 seed, closed with an 18-10 record.
Schoolfield was 9-for-13 from the field and 6-for-6 from the foul line, while Jamie Gagliano added 20 points and 10 rebounds. Gagliano was 8-for-8 from the foul line as the Mountaineers went 31-for-39 from the line.
East Tennessee State also made 31 free throws in a tourney game against Furman in 1990.
The parade to the foul line included 14-of-16 over the final 3:01 to clinch the game.
Appalachian State led by eight at halftime, but saw the Wildcats close to 58-53 with 4:47 left. However, Noel Dolan hit a shot in the lane, Gagliano sank two free throws and Lauren Romano added one to hold off the Davidson rally.
Kerry Brown led Davidson with 22 points and seven rebounds.
The Mountaineers won despite going 1-for-13 from 3-point range.
