White-McCarty awarded Wade Trophy Posted: Sunday March 28, 1999 06:16 PM
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Stephanie White-McCarty, who led Purdue to the No. 1 ranking and a spot in the national championship game, was announced Sunday as the 1999 recipient of the Wade Trophy. The award, named for women's basketball pioneer Margaret Wade, has been presented since 1978 to the nation's top player. White-McCarty was a unanimous All-American and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa earlier this season. She had a perfect 4.0 grade-point average last fall and has a 3.58 overall to go with her 20-point scoring average on the court. Previous winners have included Nancy Lieberman (1979 and 1980), Cheryl Miller (1985), Jennifer Azzi (1990), Rebecca Lobo (1995) and Jennifer Rizzotti (1996). It also was announced that Lifetime Television would join the National Association of Girls and Women in Sports and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association in sponsoring the Wade Trophy starting next year. Beth Bass, the WBCA's executive director, said the new arrangement will "bring back the Wade Trophy to the luster it deserves." Since 1986, the recipients have been chosen by the Association for Girls and Women in Sports. Starting with the 2000 trophy, the winner will be selected by a panel of coaches, NAGWS members and representatives of the news media.
