More bad Gophers news Minnesota player Ohnstad arrested for March DWIPosted: Friday April 30, 1999 06:54 PM
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- University of Minnesota basketball player Mitch Ohnstad pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol after he was arrested last month, according to police and court documents. Ohnstad was stopped by Bloomington, Minn. police shortly after midnight March 19 because his car was straddling the line separating two lanes, according to the police report. A breathalyzer test administered after he was stopped showed a 0.17 percent blood-alcohol level, 0.07 percent over the legal limit. Ohnstad pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor DWI charge April 16, according to Hennepin County Court documents. He was sentenced to 24 hours community service and paid $237 in fines and court fees. University spokesman Marc Ryan talked to Ohnstad on Thursday but said the junior from Faribault had no comment. "We are responding to this in accordance with departmental policies," Ryan said. "A [DWI] falls under our drug and alcohol policies, and we are dealing with the matter consistent with those policies." Gophers coach Clem Haskins is out of town and could not be reached for comment. Ohnstad, 21, is a guard who played in 28 games last season for the Gophers, mostly as a reserve. He transferred to Minnesota from Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo and sat out the 1997-98 season. He was selected Minnesota's Mr. Basketball in 1996 as a senior at Faribault High School. Ohnstad is the second Gopher basketball player to run into off-the-court trouble during the 1998-99 school year. Forward Miles Tarver was ticketed for using a stolen permit to park in spots designated for the disabled. He was fined $577.
