No extra year for U of L's Sanders Posted: Friday June 25, 1999 05:48 PM
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - The NCAA denied an appeal by Louisville's Alex Sanders for an extension of his eligibility, meaning the Cardinals forward's collegiate career is over. The school announced the NCAA decision Friday. Sanders enrolled at Louisville in the fall of 1994, but did not meet NCAA academic requirements for initial eligibility. After the school discovered in 1995 that Sanders had a learning disability, he met academic requirements for the 1996-97 season and played the last three years for the Cardinals. Louisville had filed its appeal based on a recent court ruling in which the NCAA allowed students with disabilities an opportunity to regain the year of eligibility they had missed. A key to the NCAA ruling was that Sanders did not meet NCAA criteria established for extension of the five-year period in which student-athletes have four seasons to compete once they enter college. Sanders led the team in rebounding with 6.3 per game as a senior. He was third-team All Conference USA, and scored in double digits in 17 games last season. He ranks eighth in career 3-point goals and scored 1,031 points in his career. Sanders is eligible for the NBA draft, but has not been working out at pre-raft camps because he would have had to pay his own way while his collegiate eligiblity was pending with the NCAA.
