MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Former Memphis basketball coach Tic Price, who resigned nine days ago, admitted Tuesday to an affair with a university student.

At a news conference at his lawyer's office, Price said he paid the 23-year-old student $17,000, but did not specify what the money was for.

Price, who read a statement and did not answer any questions, did not comment on accusations he assaulted the student.

"This affair was a failing on my part and I take total responsibility for my actions," said Price, who was accompanied by his wife Jaime. "I not only violated my marriage vows but also my role as a coach and a moral leader of my players. There is no excuse for my behavior."

Price resigned Nov. 14, two days after a second anonymous fax was sent to the university detailing his affair with the student. The first fax, sent in October, claimed the student was seen running bleeding from Price's Germantown home on Oct. 2.

Germantown police investigated the situation but did not charge Price. Investigators said they were hindered because the woman refused to talk to them and did not file a complaint.

According to phone records released by the university, 16 calls were placed between Price's office telephone and the student the day after the alleged assault. It was not clear whether the calls originated with Price or the student.

More than 1,100 calls for more than 8,300 minutes were made from Price's cell phone to the student from May 27, 1998, through Sept. 26, 1999, the records showed. The university is investigating to see whether the calls violated university policy.
