Jayhawks' Earl suspended for DUI Posted: Monday January 24, 2000 07:07 PM
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) -- Kansas forward Lester Earl has been indefinitely suspended from the basketball team, coach Roy Williams announced Monday. Earl was arrested for drunken driving and driving with a suspended license this weekend after he was stopped for speeding about 3 a.m. Sunday, said Bill Long, police chief of Eudora, east of Lawrence. Long said Earl failed a breathalyzer test and was jailed on charges of speeding, driving while intoxicated and driving with a suspended license. Earl was released on bond and was back in school on Monday. "I regret this happened," Earl said. "My bad decisions have put a negative light on our program and again, I regret that." Earl will not participate in games nor travel with the team until the suspension is lifted. "I am saddened and upset by this situation," Williams said. "Our entire team understands this is a serious matter and we will deal with it in what we feel is the appropriate manner." Earl, whose transfer from LSU in 1997 caused hard feelings between the two schools, was arrested in August for missing a court date on earlier charges of speeding and driving with a suspended license. His career at Kansas has been clouded by the transfer, which came after he admitted taking money while at LSU. The university was penalized by the NCAA in the case. Last spring, the NCAA investigated Earl's ownership of a $30,000 truck while at Kansas, prompting concerns he had received improper benefits. Nothing improper was found. Earl has never regained his superb leaping ability since he had
knee surgery in May and December. The bad knees along with ankle
injuries limited his playing time last year and most of this
season.
