BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) -- Western Kentucky plans a jersey retirement ceremony Saturday for former All-American player and coach Clem Haskins, who resigned as coach of Minnesota last summer in the wake of an academic scandal.

Haskins, a resident of Campbellsville, Ky., is to be honored at halftime of the Hilltoppers' game against Louisiana-Lafayette.

As a player, the 6-foot-3 Haskins was a three-time All-American from 1965-67, earning consensus honors in his senior season of 1967. He remains the only player ever named Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year three times. He scored 1,680 points in three seasons (freshmen were not eligible to play at the time) and set a school and OVC record that still stands by scoring 55 points against Middle Tennessee on Jan. 30, 1965.

Haskins coached Western to two Ohio Valley Conference titles and two NCAA tournament berths between 1980 and 1986, before leaving to become the coach at Minnesota. He coached there for 13 seasons, taking the Golden Gophers to the Final Four in 1997.

However, he was forced out after a former tutor, Jan Gangelhoff, said last spring she had written more than 400 papers for as many as 20 basketball players between 1993 and 1998.

Though Haskins denied any knowledge of wrongdoing, the school bought out the remainder of his contract for $1.5 million in June.

A university report issued in November concluded Haskins did know of the fraud, lied to investigators and told his players to lie after the wrongdoing was exposed.

Western sports information director Paul Just said Monday that the school took Haskins' achievements while a player and coach at Western into account in deciding to retire his jersey. The Minnesota allegations were ignored, he said.

"That was not even brought up. ... It was entirely based on what he did here as a player and a coach," Just said.
