Roy Williams Roy Williams has led Kansas to a 16-3 record so far this year, but has been very frustrated at times Todd Warshaw/Allsport

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) -- How do you say you're sorry when you've told fans to keep their "big butts at home?"

Kansas coach Roy Williams apologized on his Hawk Talk radio show Tuesday night for criticizing fans for not cheering loudly enough during Kansas' 89-74 victory over Colorado on Monday night in Lawrence.

"Ol' Roy has done some dumb things, and last night was one of them," he said.

"Sometimes you have to say you are wrong. I don't watch a lot of TV but Fonz [from the old Happy Days show] couldn't say he was wrong. Ol' Roy can say it. I was wrong."

"I've got to choose my words a heck of a lot better. I don't mean to be offensive to our people. I have a passion and love for this place. It is the best place there is to play college basketball," he said.

Williams was still hearing the hostile crowd during a loss at Missouri last week when he lashed out after the Colorado game Monday night.

"That's a sorry excuse for a home crowd. ... I don't care how you print it, and I don't care how many fans write me letters -- I'm going to throw those suckers in the trash," he said Monday.

"The kids behind the bench, the students who camped out, were fantastic. But if you're not going to cheer for us, keep your big butts at home," he said after the game.

Williams said he saw the light after a visit from former Kansas assistant coach Jerry Waugh, who told him he was wrong to chastise Kansas fans.

Waugh said Williams was under a lot of pressure because he had just suspended Lester Earl for drunken driving. "He gets frustrated like anybody. What he said Monday just didn't come out the right way."
