Lost its bite UConn battling turmoil, injuriesPosted: Monday February 07, 2000 11:18 PM
STORRS, Conn. (AP) - Out of the Top 10 for the first time in three years, the defending national champs are contending with problems both on and off the court. Freshmen Doug Wrenn and Tony Robertson were suspended for Saturday's Michigan State game for an off-campus incident that occurred earlier this year. Coach Jim Calhoun would not elaborate on the incident but said he learned of it on Thursday. The then-No. 8 Spartans soundly defeated the Huskies 85-66. Broadcast reports Monday said the two players are the subject of police investigation involving an incident at a clothing store in a Hartford-area mall. According to the reports, there were discussions with employees at the store about exchanging game tickets for shoes. A store manager apparently stepped in and prevented the transaction, according to the reports which all cited sources that were not identified.UConn suffered injury in addition to insult against Michigan State. Senior center Jake Voskuhl sprained his right ankle against Michigan State and is questionable for Wednesday's game against Boston College. A team spokesman said Voskuhl had three rehab sessions Monday with trainer Joe Sharpe and still has some swelling in the ankle. Neither Wrenn nor Robertson practiced on Monday. Calhoun said he would make a decision on when either would return "as soon as I feel comfortable that I have all the information that I need."
It's not the first time Wrenn has run afoul of Calhoun. He and reserve center Souleymane Wane were held out of a game against Duke in November for taking a taxi instead of the team bus home from the first game of the season against Iowa during the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament in Madison Square Garden. Wrenn also was cited by police outside a New Haven bar a month earlier for allegedly creating a public disturbance. At the time, Calhoun said the citation was like a parking ticket and reprimanded Wrenn. Wrenn, a 6-6 swingman from Seattle, is averaging 2.9 points and 1.2 rebounds in 17 games, including starts against Georgetown and Syracuse. Robertson has gotten valuable minutes behind point guard Khalid El-Amin. The 6-2 guard from East Providence, R.I, is averaging nearly 20 minutes a game, 7.2 points and has 29 assists. The drubbing against Michigan State on Saturday dropped the Huskies (16-5) from seventh to No. 13. Connecticut's run of 42 consecutive polls in the Top Ten began Dec. 22, 1997.
