Hoosiers' Coverdale arrested Posted: Friday May 26, 2000 10:54 AM
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (CNNSI.com) -- Indiana freshman basketball player Tom Coverdale was arrested Wednesday evening on a charge of illegal consumption after police were called to the scene of a fight at a local nightclub, the Bloomington Herald-Times reported. according to a police report by officer Fritz Lantzer. According to a police report, Coverdale and a 20-year-old man ran from the scene after police arrived at the Bluebird Nightclub after 2:30 a.m. Thursday. According to the report, Coverdale was initially believed to have battered a female inside the club. Officer Fritz Lantzer stopped the suspects a short distance away and determined no battery occurred, but cited Coverdale, 20, and the other man, also 20, for illegal consumption. Both were booked into the Monroe County Jail and later released on their own recognizance. The Indiana basketball program has been under much scrutiny in recent months for the conduct of its coach, Bob Knight, who was told he must follow a "zero tolerance" policy toward future behavior following a seven-week investigation into several incidents. Also Thursday, the school announced it would investigate the latest claims of abuse by Knight made by former player Chris Lawson, contrary to previous reports that the school would not look into the matter. Coverdale, a Noblesville, Ind., native, was the 1998 Mr. Basketball in Indiana, who later attended a New Hampshire prep school for one year. He appeared in 10 games last season for the Hoosiers, averaging 1.0 points.
