Latest: Tuesday September 12, 2000 04:05 PM

Now, stepping in for Bob Knight ...
Indiana will hire Mike Davis as interim coach for the 2000-2001 season, but speculation already is rampant on who will take over after that. Here's a look at some of the leading candidates to take the head coaching job at IU in the 2001-2002 season.
The Candidate  Why he's next in line  Why not
Steve Alford
Iowa
head coach
'87 Indiana graduate, Indiana native, favorite among Hoosiers fans, a clear front-runner  Under contract to Iowa, maybe too young (35)?
Quinn Buckner
ESPN analyst
'76 Indiana graduate, member of national championship team  No experience in college coaching
Jim Crews
Evansville
head coach
'76 Indiana graduate, member of national championship team, eight-year IU assistant  Evansville not big-time enough for many fans
Dan Dakich
Bowling Green
head coach
'85 Indiana graduate, 12-year Indiana assistant, big ties to the fired Bob Knight  May have problems replacing mentor Knight
Tom Davis
ex-Iowa coach
Loads of Big-10 experience, three decades as head coach  No Indiana ties, too old (61)?
Don DeVoe
Navy
head coach
Assistant to Bob Knight at Army, 25 years as head coach, more than 450 wins as head coach  Ohio State grad, main IU tie just got fired
Rick Majerus
Utah
head coach
A winner (almost 80 percent at Utah), big motivator and 'cause he's mentioned for every opening  Because he gets mentioned for every opening
John Treloar
IU assistant
Familiarity with program, Indiana players like him and Mike Davis  No head coaching experience
