MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Former Minnesota basketball coach Clem Haskins has asked the NCAA to reconsider a ruling that bars him from coaching until 2007 without special approval, The Minnesota Daily reported Wednesday.

Haskins filed the appeal a couple of weeks ago, his attorney Ron Zamansky told the university newspaper.

"Coach Haskins is not in agreement with the final determination [of the NCAA]," Zamansky said.

The NCAA Committee on Infractions ruled Oct. 24 that Haskins was "knowledgeable about and complicit" in an academic fraud scandal within the men's basketball department.

The NCAA banned the former coach from working in an athletics-related position at a member school unless that school could "show cause" before the infractions committee that Haskins should be hired.

Haskins has denied any wrongdoing in the widespread cheating scandal that surfaced in March 1999, when team tutor Jan Gangelhoff admitted writing more than 400 papers for at least 18 players in a five-year period.

The university pursued a nine-month, $2.2 million investigation and ended up approving a $1.5 million buyout of Haskins' contract.

The school now is trying to recover the money, saying Haskins knew about the cheating.
