COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -- University of Maryland officials apologized to a Duke University player's mother, who suffered a concussion after being hit by bottles allegedly thrown by a Terps fan.

Renee Boozer, mother of Duke center Carlos Boozer, was hit in the head with a glass and plastic bottle following Duke's 98-96 overtime win Saturday.

Maryland President C.D. Mote Jr. described the incident as a case of "hooliganism" in a statement Tuesday. He, Maryland Athletic Director Deborah Yow and coach Gary Williams released letters apologizing to Duke and Mrs. Boozer.

Mote attributed the barrage of water bottles, cups and other debris thrown at the Duke bench to Maryland students. He said it was not an isolated incident.

"When visitors cannot come to our athletic events without fear of assault, or actually experiencing assault, something is very wrong," he said.

Williams, who has been at Maryland since 1989, expressed his displeasure with the display.

"As upset as I am about the outcome of our Duke game this past Saturday, I am more upset about the actions of some of our students before, during, and after the game," he said.

Mote called for an immediate review of security at Cole Field House. University police were going through security videotapes from the game to identify the offenders.

Carlos Boozer said his mother had some severe headaches from the incident but was recovering.
