Prince of the SEC SEC coaches tab Kentucky guard player of year
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Mississippi coach Rod Barnes and Kentucky's Tayshaun Prince earned top Southeastern Conference honors in balloting among the league's coaches. Barnes was named SEC Coach of the Year after his team after leading his team from fifth in the Western Division to first. He is the first Ole Miss coach to win the award since Lee Hunt shared it in 1983. Prince led the Wildcats to a share of the SEC and East Division titles, earning Player of the Year honors. He becomes the first Kentucky player to win the honor since Tony Delk and Ron Mercer won back-to-back awards in 1996 and 1997, respectively. Prince was also named first team All-SEC along with Alabama's Rod Grizzard, Florida's Udonis Haslem and Brett Nelson and Ole Miss' Rahim Lockhart. The Rebels' Justin Reed was named SEC Freshman of the Year. He was the only unanimous pick for the SEC All-Freshman Team, which includes Alabama's Gerald Wallace, Kentucky's Gerald Fitch and Jason Parker and Vanderbilt's Matt Freije. The Associated Press All-SEC team will be released on Tuesday.
