RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Damien Wilkins withdrew from the NBA draft on Wednesday, one day after learning he couldn't rejoin the North Carolina State team and being told by a pro coach he should stay in school.

Wilkins, the son of former NBA player Gerald Wilkins and the nephew of former All-Star Dominique Wilkins, withdrew before the deadline for underclassmen to pull out of the draft and retain their college eligibility, N.C. State spokeswoman Annabelle Vaughan said.

Wolfpack coach Herb Sendek said Tuesday that Wilkins would not be back on the team, meaning the junior must seek a transfer if he wants to continue playing.

Wilkins averaged 11.7 points last season for the Wolfpack (13-16). He declared for the draft after his sophomore season and worked out for Charlotte, Miami and Orlando.

After Wilkins went through a pre-draft workout for the Hornets on Tuesday, coach Paul Silas said he should return to school. Silas said he would not consider using a first-round pick on Wilkins this year.
