HOUSTON (AP) -- Guy Lewis, the former Houston basketball coach who took the Cougars to five Final Fours, was hospitalized Tuesday for treatment of an apparent stroke. Lewis, 79, was taken to Methodist Hospital about 2 a.m. Tuesday.

The school said in a statement Lewis was under observation, alert and speaking and would undergo tests to determine the severity of what doctors believed was a stroke.

Lewis won 592 games and had a winning percentage of .679 in 30 years as Houston's coach. He retired in 1986.
