Tuesday roundup UNC seniors Johnson, Holmes appealing suspensionsPosted: Tuesday November 12, 2002 6:02 PMUpdated: Tuesday November 12, 2002 9:56 PM CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -- North Carolina appealed the one-game suspensions of Will Johnson and Jonathan Holmes due to their participation in a campus charity event. Holmes and Johnson will miss Monday's season-opener against Penn State in the Preseason NIT unless they are reinstated by the NCAA. The seniors participated in a 3-on-3 basketball tournament in the spring. Holmes and Johnson paid the entry fee and did not receive prize money or gifts. NCAA rules prohibit men's basketball players from participating in unsanctioned leagues, tournaments or games. School spokesman Steve Kirschner said the players will have a hearing with the NCAA later this week, and a ruling could come as early as Saturday. Johnson, 6-foot-8 forward, averaged 3.9 points and 2.5 rebounds last season. Holmes is a reserve point guard.
