INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Freshman J.J. Redick might have found his niche at Duke already.

Redick scored 20 points Saturday, leading sixth-ranked Duke past No. 14 UCLA 84-73 at the Wooden Tradition in a game pitting two programs with a total of 14 national titles.

John Wooden, who coached UCLA to 10 of its 11 NCAA championships, presented Duke with a trophy for winning the game. It might have upset him to see the Bruins drop to 0-2.

Nick Horvath added 16 points to help Duke improve to 7-1 against the Bruins under coach Mike Krzyzewski.

The Blue Devils (3-0) used a 22-6 burst in the second half to open a 21-point lead. Daniel Ewing started the run with a 3-pointer, and Redick contributed eight points.

While Redick was sharp from outside, going 5-for-10 from 3-poing range, he also displayed some nifty moves. He pump-faked Dijon Thompson on the baseline, then moved to the lane and drove for an uncontested layup.

Redick made it 65-44 with his fourth 3-pointer of the game.

UCLA trailed 70-53 when Jason Kapono (19 points) scored nine points to help the Bruins pull within nine.

But Duke's Chris Duhon answered with consecutive layups to push the lead back to double-digits. Kapono sank a 3 with 1:31 left to make it 81-69, but the Bruins never got closer.

Thompson scored 15, and Cedric Bozeman 11 for UCLA.

Dahntay Jones scored 13 points, while Ewing added 12 for Duke, which shot 54.2 percent from the field. Ewing made three 3s, and Horvath was 7-for-10 from the floor.

UCLA, coming off an 86-82 loss in its home opener against San Diego, opened Saturday's game with a 12-2 run before missing 12 of its next 15 shots. Duke scored 13 straight points, a 3 by Ewing stretching Duke's lead to 32-23.

But Ray Young scored 10 points in the final four minutes as UCLA pulled to 40-33 at the half.
