Tenn. St. supsends Richardson's son Posted: Saturday December 28, 2002 11:32 AMNASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Tennessee State suspended men's basketball coach Nolan Richardson III indefinitely for an undisclosed violation of university policy, officials confirmed Saturday. Richardson was suspended Friday and did not travel with the Tigers (2-5) to Ohio State for Saturday's game. Officials said in a statement that assistant coach Hosea Lewis will serve as acting coach. Athletic director Teresa Phillips, with the Tigers in Ohio, did not immediately return a telephone message left by The Associated Press. The NCAA is investigating the Tigers for rules violations under Richardson. The inquiry involves allegations of impermissible practice out of season, providing extra benefits to recruits and unethical conduct by a coach. Richardson, the son of former Arkansas men's basketball coach Nolan Richardson, is 23-41 since his hiring in April 2000. He played two seasons at Oklahoma State and was an assistant coach under his father at Arkansas from between 1991 and 2000. The suspension was reported Friday night by several Nashville television stations and by The Tennessean newspaper Saturday. Lewis has been with Richardson since he took over at Tennessee State. The Tigers' current road trip concludes Monday with a visit to No. 14 Kentucky.
