Before most major-conference teams even began their conference tournaments Thursday, there had been several developments affecting their NCAA tournament hopes.

On Monday, shaky at-large candidates like Indiana and N.C. State received good news in the form of Georgia declaring itself ineligible for the postseason. Seeing as the Bulldogs were at-large locks, an extra spot had suddenly opened up for bubble teams.

But then came the rash of upsets in several mid-major conference tournaments. In particular, Butler and Gonzaga, favorites in their respective tournaments, went down in the title games, but both still possess favorable at-large credentials. That means the unheralded Horizon and West Coast conferences, respectively, could be getting two teams each this tournament.

And that means potentially two less for the big boys.

After subtracting the number of teams that have either already received automatic bids, are current leaders in conferences yet to give out their automatic bid or will be locks to receive an at-large, there were realistically only about 10 spots still available for bubble teams headed into Thursday’s action.

Minnesota and St. John's can forget about their dreams of playing in the Big Dance. Minnesota's 76-64 loss to Northwestern in the first round of the Big Ten tournament -- the Gophers' fifth straight loss -- burst the bubble of Rick Rickert and Co. St. John's stayed alive with a first-round Big East victory against Notre Dame on Wednesday, but the Red Storm came crashing down with an overtime loss to Boston College on Thursday.

Check back each day between now and Sunday to see which teams have locked up bids, which teams have played their way out of contention and which must keep sweating all the way up to the selection show.
