WKU begins search for new coach Posted: Thursday April 10, 2003 4:19 PMUpdated: Thursday April 10, 2003 5:15 PM LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Western Kentucky University's search for a new men's basketball coach will be quick, efficient and not careless, athletic director Wood Selig said Thursday. Selig is a member of the four-person search committee charged with finding a replacement for Dennis Felton, who resigned as the Hilltoppers' coach Thursday to become coach at Georgia. The committee met for the first time Thursday morning in Bowling Green. Selig and Western Kentucky president Gary Ransdell learned Wednesday night of Felton's plans to take the Georgia job, then joined the coaching staff in a meeting with Western Kentucky players. "We have literally been inundated with calls and faxes of some very well-known head coaches and some dynamic assistant coaches," Selig said. "We are going to spend the next 24 to 48 hours sorting through all of that. We expect to start moving forward in a couple of days. "We were not caught off-guard or flat-footed. We sensed that coach Felton, being the dynamic individual he is, would interview well and would emerge as the No. 1 choice for the University of Georgia. We have been doing homework, compiling our lists of interested and potential candidates." The search committee consists of Ransdell, Selig, Western Kentucky attorney Deborah Wilkins and faculty athletic representative James Brown. Ransdell said the committee started with a list of 20 to 25 names, and that the list already has been narrowed to 10 to 12. Selig said Pete Herrmann, the Hilltoppers' associate head coach, would be considered for the job. Herrmann has been at Western Kentucky since 1998. He served as the head coach at Navy for six seasons, from 1986 through 1992. Herrmann, 54, was an assistant coach at Navy in 1986, when the Midshipmen reached the Elite Eight in the NCAA tournament. As the head coach, he guided Navy back to the NCAA tournament in 1987. The next coach will owe Felton a measure of gratitude, Ransdell said. "Because of what Dennis has done for the program, we're going to have a very strong pool," Ransdell said.
