HOMETOWN: Grew up outside of Asheville, N.C., in the small
community of Biltmore.
EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in education, North Carolina,
1972. Masters of Arts in Teaching, North Carolina, 1973.
COACHING EXPERIENCE: Coached at Swannanoa (N.C.) Owen High
School from 1973 to 1978. He was a North Carolina assistant coach
from 1978 to 1988. He was hired at Kansas in July 1988. He has led
the Jayhawks to the Final Four four times -- in 1991, 1993, 2002 and
2003.
HIGH SCHOOL: Attended T.C. Roberson High School in Arden, N.C.,
where he earned letters in basketball and baseball for four
seasons. In basketball, he was named all-country and all-conference
in 1967 and 1968, all-western North Carolina in 1968 and served as
captain in the North Carolina Blue-White All-Star Game.
COLLEGE: His playing days ended after playing on North
Carolina's freshman team in 1968-69 as a non-scholarship player.
Afterwards, he often sat in on Tar Heel practice sessions taking
notes.
FAMILY: Married to Wanda Williams. The couple has two children,
Scott, a former guard on the North Carolina basketball team, and
Kimberly, a 2002 graduate of North Carolina.
QUOTE: "I've never been one to like moral victories, and I
don't like this one," Williams said after losing to the Syracuse
in the 2003 NCAA tournament finals. "But I love the
