ELON, N.C. (AP) -- Ernie Nestor, an assistant at South Carolina and former coach at Wake Forest, was named head coach at Elon on Monday.

Nestor, 56, spent eight years under Dave Odom at Wake Forest and followed him to the Gamecocks two seasons ago. He has been in college coaching since 1976, including an earlier stint with the Demon Deacons.

Nestor was hired as Elon leaves the Big South Conference this summer to join the Southern Conference.

"I am very excited for sure," Nestor said. "We have to compete and excel and plan our level of work to meet the challenge ahead."

Nestor was an assistant at Wake Forest from 1979 to 1985 and under Odom from 1993 to 2001. He was on the staff of teams that won the Atlantic Coast Conference championship in 1995 and 1996 and the 2000 NIT title.

He was head coach at George Mason from 1988 to 1993, going 68-81 and earning the 1989 Colonial Athletic Association title. Nestor also was an assistant at California.

A native of Philippi, W.Va., Nestor graduated in 1968 from Alderson-Broaddus and earned a master's degree from West Virginia in 1970.
