Top recruits recommit to Jayhawks Posted: Friday April 25, 2003 12:48 PMLAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) -- Two of the Kansas Jayhawks' top basketball recruits have recommitted themselves to the university after visits this week from new coach Bill Self. David Padgett, a 6-foot-11-inch McDonald's All-American from Reno, Nev., and Omar Wilkes, 6-foot-2, from Los Angeles, both were impressed by the man who replaced Roy Williams at the helm of the storied Kansas basketball program. "Coach Self is an awesome person," Wilkes said. "It hasn't been the easiest last couple of weeks, but everything happens for a reason. I'll be there June 30 ready to go." David Padgett's dad, Pete, who expressed concerns for his son's future immediately after Williams announced he was going to North Carolina, said the picture became much more clear after Self's visit Wednesday. "I can't imagine a better pick," said Pete Padgett, head basketball coach at Reno High. "What a personable, energetic person. Gosh, he's a lot of fun to be around. ... We all took a big sigh of relief." Two other University of Kansas signees, J.R. Giddens and Jeremy Case, also have indicated they plan to attend Kansas despite the coaching change. That means Self is 4-for-4 in keeping Williams' recruits. "David was disappointed [when Williams left], but at the same time, the University of Kansas is getting the best young coach in the country," Pete Padgett said. "I don't think there's any doubt." |
