ISU student manager: I was fired Posted: Sunday May 04, 2003 3:44 PMAMES, Iowa (AP) -- A top student manager for the Iowa State men's basketball team who rallied in support of suspended coach Larry Eustachy says he has been fired. Jafar Azmayesh, a senior from Ames, said Saturday that athletic director Bruce Van De Velde told him his services were no longer needed. "He told me, 'You're done and I don't want you stepping foot in the basketball office again,'" Azmayesh said. "I told him [Van De Velde] that I didn't want to work anyway. I told him if coach isn't here, I don't want to be here. "Basically I got the sense that if we were going to oppose his decision [to suspend Eustachy], then [he was saying], screw you guys." Azmayesh said he helped at a pro-Eustachy rally last week. Laird Veatch, a senior associate athletic director, disputed Azmayesh's account of the meeting with Van De Velde. Veatch said Azmayesh prompted Van De Velde to tell him directly that he was "done with the program." "I remember Bruce saying that because Jafar was yelling profanities and threats. He interrupted Bruce throughout his entire statement with those kinds of comments," Veatch said Saturday. Veatch said he has filed a report with university officials about the incident and that the report had been forwarded to Iowa State's Public Safety Department for review. Athletic department spokesman Tom Kroeschell said Saturday that Azmayesh, who earned $3,427 in 2002, would be paid through the remainder of the school year. He confirmed that Azmayesh would no longer be working for the school. |
