MU's White resigns for post at UC Posted: Tuesday June 03, 2003 5:27 PMCHARLESTON, WVa. (AP) -- Marshall University head basketball coach Greg White has resigned and will return to his old job at the University of Charleston. White, 44, made the announcement Tuesday. He signed a three-year contract with Charleston. Terms were not disclosed. Charleston's basketball vacancy was created when Jayson Gee resigned to accept an assistant coaching position at St. Bonaventure. White guided the Division-I Thundering Herd to a combined 115-84 record in his seven seasons at Marshall, but was just 29-30 in the last two. The Mullens native served as Charleston's's head coach from 1989 to 1995, compiling an overall 68-70 record. White helped lead the Division-II Golden Eagles to capture a West Virginia Conference regular-season title and a WVC Tournament crown. He also served as a UCLA assistant in 1995 and 1996, and has previously served as head coach at Pikeville College in Kentucky. White says part of his reason for leaving Marshall was that he suffered personal tragedies in the past two years. His parents home in Mullens was destroyed in a flood two summers ago. White's home in Charleston was destroyed by fire two years ago. And White's mother-in-law died last year.
