Top recruit Curry to sign with DePaul

By Seth Davis, Sports Illustrated DePaul coach Pat Kennedy got some good news Sunday -- sort of -- when Eddy Curry of South Holland, Ill., informed Kennedy that he had signed a national letter-of-intent to play for DePaul. Curry's father, however, told me on Monday that the 6-foot-10, 280-pound center is still contemplating whether to enter the NBA draft next spring. "If he's projected to be picked high enough, we'll go for it," Eddy Curry Sr. said Monday. "But if he feels like he needs to improve his stock, college is still an option." Curry, ranked the top player in the class by CNNSI.com recruiting analyst Brick Oettinger, is already qualified academically for next season, so his decision will be strictly business. Eddy Sr. said his son's final choice came down to DePaul and Illinois. He also considered Cincinnati and Memphis. DePaul has been projected as the favorite to land Curry since early this summer, when Kennedy hired Donnie Kirksey as an assistant. Kirksey, who worked for two years as a grassroots representative for Nike before spending two years as an assistant at Chicago State, is a relative of Curry's mother and has known Curry since he was young. Curry has already signed his letter-of-intent, but as of Monday afternoon his father still had to add his own signature before sending it to the DePaul basketball office. As a high school junior Curry averaged 24.6 points, 11.2 rebounds and 3.8 blocks while leading Thornwood High to a 25-4 record. Many NBA scouts project him to be a top-10 pick in next year's draft. DePaul has already signed five players this fall, and Kennedy's class would likely be ranked among the nation's finest if Curry were to enroll. Kennedy's other signees are 6-4 guard LaVar Seals of Providence, Ill.; 6-9 Kenny Adelke of New York; 6-8 Sam Hoskins of Livonia, Mich., a junior college player; 6-7 Quemont Greer of Homestead, Fla.; and 6-4 Drake Diener of Fond du Lac, Wis.
The early-signing period for college basketball recruits began Nov. 8 and closes on Wednesday.
