Williams-Brewer duo leads Memphis to AAU National title

ORLANDO, Fla. -- What happens when you combine two of the nation’s best small forward prospects on the same AAU team, mix in a fiery point guard and get steady play for a steadily improving power forward?

The answer is an AAU National Championship.

Last week, Memphis YOMCA defeated Martin Bros. Select, a scrappy bunch of kids from Iowa, for the coveted national championship. Memphis gritted out the 62-56 win as forward Shawne Williams led the way with a game-high 21 points.

Williams, a regular for Memphis, welcomed in Corey Brewer, an import from another AAU team in Tennessee, for the event. The marriage worked extremely well on a number of fronts.

For starters, Brewer’s regular AAU team, the Tennessee Travelers, missed the Nike Peach Jam and wasn’t playing in the national championship. The small forward thought of himself as a potential McDonald’s All-American and was seeking maximum summer exposure. Enter Memphis YOMCA.

The team gave Brewer the chance he needed to be seen again one last time on the national level and he didn’t waste it. The defensive wizard hit for 40 points in one game and 16 in the title tilt.

Williams, a McDonald’s All-American candidate himself, deserves plenty of credit for willing to share the spotlight. With chemistry never becoming an issue, Williams and Brewer blended together remarkably well.

Memphis also received sound play at the point from Andre Allen, who does a great Jerome Bettis-with-a-basketball impersonation as he points himself to the rim and gets things done. Frank Holmes’ excellent play in the paint probably won him a handful more scholarship offers from high-major programs.

Meanwhile, Martin Bros. was a model of consistency in their run to the championship game. Senior swingman Jimmy Binnie was the team’s leading scorer but guys like guards Trent Meacham and Dylan Grimsley stepped up at different occasions as did power forward Alex Thompson, a young man ticketed for Iowa in 2004.

Commitment Catch Up (Class of 2004)

Tulane landed Louisiana native David Gomez, a power forward. Gomez had received heavy interest from Rice, Vanderbilt and Georgia.

Derrick Low, a guard from Hawaii, has elected to play his college ball at Washington State. He’s the Cougars first commitment in his class.

Commitment Catch Up (Class of 2005)

Texas, a program that already has five commitments from the Class of 2004, dipped into the 2005 pool, nabbing point guard A.J. Abrams out of Austin.
