No. 3 seed Iowa State defeats St. Francis 92-63

AMES, Iowa (Ticker) -- Angie Welle led a dominant effort by the Iowa State frontcourt with 18 points and 14 rebounds as the third-seeded Cyclones rolled to a 92-63 victory over No. 14 St. Francis in a Midwest Region first-round game.
Welle made 7-of-11 shots and committed just one foul in 30 minutes for Iowa State (26-5), which improved to 14-1 on its home court this season and will host Illinois in the second round. Tonight's game was played before a NCAA first-round record 13,617 at the Hilton Coliseum.
Megan Taylor and All-American candidate Stacy Frese added 17 and 16 points, respectively, for the Cyclones. Iowa State outscored St. Francis in the paint, 36-12, and had a 15-3 edge in second-chance points.
The Cyclones never trailed and went ahead for good, 9-6, on a 3-pointer by Desiree Francis with 17:44 left in the first half.
The Red Flash (23-8) hung around and trailed 17-14 before Welle's follow shot triggered a game-breaking 26-7 burst.
Jess Zenobile led all scorers with 27 points on 12-of-22 shooting and pulled down nine rebounds for St. Francis, which shot under 37 percent (26-of-71). The Red Flash committed only seven turnovers but were outrebounded, 50-28 and made just four trips to the foul line.
Lindsey Wilson contributed 13 points and six assists off the bench for Iowa State, which shot nearly 54 percent (35-of-65) and was 15-of-31 from 3-point range. St. Francis made 8-of-31 3-pointers.
