Vanderbilt defeats Kansas 71-69 Posted: Saturday March 25, 2000 03:03 PM
RUSTON, Louisiana (Ticker) -- Jillian Danker and Ashley McElhiney each made free throws in the final 30 seconds of double overtime and Lynn Pride missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer as No. 9 seed Vanderbilt topped No. 8 Kansas, 71-69, in a first-round Midwest Region battle. Playing in its 11th NCAA Tournament in 12 years, Vanderbilt improved the Southeastern Conference's record to 6-0 after the first round. The Commodores will battle top seed Louisiana Tech on Monday. Danker drilled a 3-pointer and freshman Chantelle Anderson added a basket as the Commodores opened a 67-64 lead with 3:28 left. Following Suzi Raymant's jumper that pulled the Jayhawks within a point, Zuzana Klimesova countered as Vanderbilt opened a 69-66 lead with 55 seconds to play. Raymant scored 14 points, including a 3-pointer with 36 seconds left for a 69-69 tie. Danker made 1-of-2 with 30 seconds left and McElhiney did the same with two seconds to go after Raymant missed a 3-pointer. Pride, an All-American, caught a pass at the top of the key but her potential game-winner hit the back of the rim at the buzzer as Kansas finished with four losses in five games. Anderson scored 25 points, Klimesova added 20 and Chavonne Hammond 11 for the Commodores, who shot 46 percent (30-of-65) overall and 7-of-9 in the overtimes. Klimesova and Danker grabbed 11 rebounds apiece. Pride reached double figures for the 27th time this season with 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Jennifer Jackson chipped in 15 points and Jaclyn Johnson 12 for the Jayhawks, who were appearing in their ninth straight NCAA Tournament but fell to 9-11 overall.
