Site: Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kans. Immaculata College (Pa.) capped the first women's dynasty with its third consecutive national championship in front of 2,500 fans. Theresa Shank, who won the final AIAW title as the coach of Rutgers in 1982, Marianne Crawford, who later coached Old Dominion to an NCAA championship in 1985, Rene Muth [took Penn State to Final Four in 1996] and Mary Scharff were the team's leaders on the floor. Interesting Fact: This year was significant because 1974 was the first inclusion of schools and athletes receiving scholarships on an equal basis. The 1972 passing of Title IX, which became federal law, mandated that female athletes have access to a number of scholarships comparable to the number available to men. Firsts: Immaculata became the first women's college team to play outside the country (Australia). Staying On: After finishing her playing days, Scharff returned to coach Immaculata from 1985-98. Wanting In: University of Alaska and the University of Hawaii asked to be considered for selection to the 16-team tournament. The AIAW committee decided to allow them to apply, but both had to submit videotape for evaluation. Neither team was selected.
