Virginia Tech's 15-0 run keys 77-57 triumph

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) -- Virginia Tech opened a 15-0 lead, and Chrystal Starling scored 15 of her 20 points in the second half as the Hokies beat Denver 77-57 in the first round of the Mideast Regional.

Starling led five players in double figures, and Virginia Tech held Michaela Pavlickova -- the Sun Belt Conference player of the year -- to 10 points on 5-of-17 shooting in Denver's first appearance in the NCAA tournament.

Tere Williams added 16 points, and Sarah Hicks had 14 for the Hokies (22-8).

Nikki Weddle led the Pioneers (24-7) with 16 points.

Virginia Tech shot 55 percent from the field, hit 22 of 24 free throws and held Denver to 34-percent field-goal shooting.

The teams combined for 43 turnovers.
