No. 6 Colorado defeats Siena
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Mandy Nightingale scored 18 points to lead Colorado to a 98-78 victory over Siena in the first round of the Midwest Regional. The Buffaloes (22-8) hit 63 percent of their shots from the floor (38-for-60) and blew the game open by making 16 of their first 17 attempts in the second half. The sixth-seeded Buffaloes will play the winner of the Vanderbilt-Idaho State game in the second round Monday. Colorado got 17 points from both Tera Bjorklund and Eisha Bohman, 13 from Carolina Koechlin and 10 from Jenny Roulier. Siena (24-6) entered with a 15-game winning streak but had no answer for Colorado's sweet shooting.
Sacha Baker and Liene Jansone led the Saints with 16 points each. Gunta Basko, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference player of the year, struggled to score 10 points. Mary McKissack added 11 for Siena. The Buffaloes had a 10-point lead at halftime and put it away with a remarkable display of shooting in the first 91/2 minutes of the second half. Colorado reeled off 16 straight points in one four-minute stretch, hitting all eight of its field-goal attempts, for a 77-48 lead with 11 1/2 minutes to go. At that point, the Buffaloes were shooting better than 70 percent from the floor. Koechlin (5-of-6) and Bohman (8-of-10) each had six points during the 16-0 run. Siena answered with six 3-pointers in the last 101/2 minutes, but never threatened. The Buffaloes were just as good at the foul line, where they made 17 of 19 attempts.
