Huskies fan celebrate in Storrs Posted: Monday April 01, 2002 12:31 AM
STORRS, Conn. (AP) -- Gampel Pavilion was the place to be Monday night for Connecticut women's basketball fans unable to make the trip to San Antonio for the Final Four. Nearly 4,000 fans jumped to their feet, shouted and waived blue and white pompoms in front of big-screen televisions as the Huskies beat Oklahoma 82-70 to complete a 39-0 season with their third national title. The Huskies were scheduled to return Monday and a homecoming celebration was scheduled for Gampel Pavilion at about 5:30 p.m. "Make no bones about it. A perfect season, 39-0. What more can you ask for?" said Paul Wendrychowicz, a mailman from Wethersfield who watched the game at Gampel. Hundreds of fans gathered under the awning of Gampel's south entrance after the game, seeking refuge from the rain. Rap music blared in the background. One fan was lifted by the crowd and passed around, an activity called crowd surfing. Police reported no problems on campus. "I have never been more excited about anything in my life," said Dan Wilbur, a graduate education student from Storrs. "Three national titles in my five years here. This is awesome."
