Old Dominion shut down Tennessee thanks to Anne Donovan's 10 blocks and 17 rebounds. Inge Nissen scored 20 points and the Lady Monarchs held Tennessee guards Holly Warlick and Lea Henry to a dismal 3-for-18 from the field. As a team, the Lady Vols shot just 33 percent.

They Said It: "People [in Europe] asked me, 'Where is it? Is it part of America?' I'd say, 'Yes, it's a nice school with nice people. And coaches here told me, 'You'll never win a championship or make All-America or get any recognition if you go to ODU.' I hate to say I told you so, but ...," All- America Nancy Lieberman said after Old Dominion, based in Norfolk, Va., won its second consecutive championship.

Interesting Fact: The AIAW's transfer rule allowed players to switch schools and play right away. The liberal rule allowed Tennessee to pluck Cindy Noble away from Ohio State and All-America Jill Rankin from Wayland Baptist in Texas. Both players led the Lady Vols' march to the final.

Surprise: South Carolina upset Louisiana Tech in the consolation game to secure third place in the tournament.

Firsts: It was Tennessee's third trip to the Final Four but first appearance in the final game.

Giving It His All: During the semifinals, Louisiana Tech assistant coach Leon Barmore collapsed of heat exhaustion.

SI's Take: "Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., until 1962 a mere appendage of the College of William & Mary, is the nation's capital of his-and-hers hoops. The male Monarchs, winners of the Division II NCAA title in 1975, made it into the Division I tournament this year, losing to UCLA 87-84. Not bad, though they'd better watch out, lest the Lady Monarchs turn the school into a matriarchy."
