Tournament MVP: Angela Turner, Louisiana Tech

Louisiana Tech won its first championship after being denied in the previous two years. Tech countered Tennessee's strong inside game with a zone defense. Turner led all scorers with 16 points.

They Said It: "I think they're ripe. I mean, 32 games? How can anyone stay psyched for 32 games?" Southern California coach Linda Sharp said of Louisiana Tech's winning streak before becoming victim No. 33 in the semifinals.

Interesting Fact: Before Sonja Hogg led Louisiana Tech to its first title, the school's claim to fame was a balding quarterback named Terry Bradshaw.

Surprise: Tennessee knocked out back-to-back defending champion Old Dominion in the semifinals.

Lasts: The last unbeaten team to win the AIAW championship was Delta State in 1975.

No Revenge: Tech had beaten Tennessee 77-53 before Christmas. "I don't see this as a chance for revenge. To me it's a chance to win a national championship," Tennessee coach Pat Summitt said before the final.

Winning Big: Louisiana Tech won regular-season games by an average score of 32.3 points.

SI's Take: "Besides the abundance of talent on Louisiana Tech's team, there's a lot of coaching ability sitting there, too. Hogg is head honcho -- recruiting, leading and putting the finishing touches on game plans. Next in line is Leon Barmore, who handles the Xs and Os. Poor Barmore, he's a grade-B version of Bobby Knight who gets so worked up on the job he comes out of games more drained than his players."
