Floyd fuels Clemson surge Updated: Sunday December 24, 2000 5:57 PM

The Clemson Tigers are quickly making an impression this season. Sophomore Chrissy Floyd deserves much of the credit.
Unranked Clemson (8-2 overall, 1-0 in the ACC) defeated No. 9 Auburn 72-61 on Dec. 21 in Myrtle Beach, S.C., behind Floyd's 23 points. Floyd, a second-team All-ACC guard as a freshman, hit 7 of her 12 attempts from the floor and 8-of-10 from the free-throw line in the upset. The loss was Auburn's first of the season.
But the victory wasn't Clemson's first such surprise of the young season. The Tigers also handed Duke (11-1, 0-1) its lone loss of the season on Dec. 9 at Littlejohn Coliseum 93-75. Floyd dropped 23 points on the Blue Devils as well.
Clemson's two losses came in November at the hands of Illinois and Tennessee. The Tigers get a break in the schedule as they next take on Wofford on Dec. 28 at home.
Barksdale not allergic to awards
Nine days after North Carolina forward LaQuanda Barksdale left at halftime of the Tar Heels' Dec. 9 game against Maryland with an allergic reaction, she earned ACC player of the week honors.
The senior scored 27 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in a Dec. 16 beating of Winthrop. Barksdale recorded her fourth double-double of the season in the 71-48 win while shooting 12-for-19 from the field. She leads the conference with averages of 19.4 points and 10.9 rebounds per game.
Barksdale had 13 points and seven rebounds in the first half of the Maryland game, but never emerged from the locker room in the second half because she was being treated for a swollen face and throat.
Duke's Rometra Craig was named the league's rookie of the week on Dec. 18 after her outing against Arkansas State in the Fun in the Sun Shootout in Cancun, Mexico.
She tallied 10 points, one rebound, one assist and two steals in 21 minutes of action in the Blue Devils' 69-45 win. It was the fourth time this season the 5-foot-10 guard from Portola Valley, Calif., scored in double figures.
Seminoles in spirit of giving
The Florida State Seminoles are taking their game to the kids this season.
The team has been performing community service in the Tallahassee, Fla., area since coach Sue Semrau took over in 1997. Now they are taking their chores on the road.
The members of the team provide clinics and companionship for children at schools and charitable organizations. This season they have reached out to children in New York and Orlando before their basketball games there.
The Seminoles next play Coppin State Dec. 28 in Tallahassee.
