By Mike Ogle, Special to CNNSI.com

Virginia forward Schuye LaRue racked up back-to-back double-doubles on the road last week, tying a school record with 20 rebounds against California-Santa Barbara on Dec. 28. The Cavaliers (9-4) split their games at Santa Barbara and Cal State Northridge.

The sophomore's effort on the boards in a 78-66 loss to Santa Barbara tied a records set before LaRue was even born. LaRue's efforts matched marks set by Lesley Berens in 1975 and Chrissy Reese in 1980. LaRue was born on Sep. 10, 1981.

UVa. bounced back the next day defeating Cal State Northridge 75-69 as LaRue picked up her third consecutive double-double and eighth of the season, matching her total from her freshman campaign. LaRue had a double-double in Virginia's 73-46 rout of Liberty on Dec. 20 before the team got a break for the holidays.

The Cavaliers weren't the only ACC club on the West Coast this week. Maryland also split two games in California.

The Terrapins dropped Santa Clara 72-50 on Dec. 27 before falling at San Francisco 72-59 the following day.

Beware of falling records

LaRue wasn't the only player setting records Dec. 28. Florida State's Levys Torres got in on the action, as well.

The senior had 24 points and 24 rebounds in the Seminoles' 86-49 blowout of Coppin State. The 24 points were a career high for Torres, and the 24 rebounds set a new FSU single-game record. She had tied her previous career high of 12 rebounds by halftime. The Seminoles (8-2) outrebounded Coppin State by a 51-37 margin in the dominating effort.

Meanwhile in North Carolina, UNC forward LaQuanda Barksdale had her sights set on a personal mark of her own.

The senior dropped a career-high 32 points on Elon in a 77-58 victory for North Carolina (7-3) on Dec. 28. She reached the mark shooting 11-for-22 from the floor and 9-for-11 from the free-throw line. She added 14 rebounds to her 32 points for her fifth double-double of the season.

Back to business

With no team having played more than one conference opponent thus far, the ACC schedule heats up this week as the cupcake portion of the season dies down.

N.C. State (9-1, 1-0 in the ACC) heads to Florida State for the Seminoles' first league contest of the year Dec. 30 while four other teams will continue with non-conference matchups.

But the rest of the conference gets into the swing of things after the New Year. Clemson (9-2, 1-0) heads to Maryland (9-3, 0-1), Wake Forest (7-3, 0-1) travels to Duke (11-1, 0-1), Georgia Tech (6-3, 0-1) plays at North Carolina (7-3, 1-0) and Virginia (8-4, 1-0) hosts first-place N.C. State (9-1, 1-0) on Jan. 2.

This week will provide the teams with their first real tastes of what the rest of the league has to offer.
