Just coaching Jody Conradt to step down as Texas women's AD
AUSTIN (AP) -- Deciding to concentrate solely on coaching, Texas women's basketball coach Jody Conradt said Thursday she will resign from her duties as women's athletics director. Conradt, the winningest coach in college women's history with 766 career victories, has served as the Longhorns' women's athletic director since 1992. Conradt, 59, first came to Texas in 1976 as women's basketball coach. Last season, she became the first woman to coach 1,000 games in a career. The Longhorns won the national championship in 1986. During her tenure as women's athletic director, the school switched from the old Southwest Conference to the Big 12. Since she took over the women's program, Texas teams have won six national championships -- four in track and field and two tennis titles -- and 39 conference championships. The women's program has 11 varsity sports. "I will miss leading this team, but this is an appropriate time for personal transition," Conradt said. "I look forward to dedicating all of my time forward to our players and coaching staff. We have made significant progress over the past two years. We have a strong staff and excellent recruiting class. We intend to be an improved basketball team next season," she said. Texas has lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament each of the last three seasons. Chris Plonsky, senior associate athletics director for men's and women's athletics will serve as interim women's athletic director, the school said. Patricia Ohlendord, UT's vice president for legal affairs, said the school will consider whether to maintain separate women's and men's athletic departments.
